<$BlogRSDUrl$>

Hello. I haven't posted for a year and all the old links and images expired a few months back, but I thought it would be a shame to lose everything I have ever blogged about, as much for my own memory as anything else.

So, I have created a new Archive that currently has 1797 tracks spanning 19 years of blogging. I am still missing a few hundred from what I can tell, that have disappeared from my collection over the years (probably the more questionable selections!)... but I do have a list of the missing ones. So, I will find them and add them to the Archive as and when I can along with some nice new images, typically found on Are.na these days (highly recommended).

The player in the Archive will randomly select and play a song from the list and accompanying image, but if you click the text at the top you will be able to view, search and filter the entire list.

This was a nice little project, I think they call it 'vibe coding' these days. The internet has changed lots in nearly 20 years!

And below is 12 months of songs I have enjoyed and saved to a Playlist called 'If You Ever Post Again'.

So here we are :) Take it easy

  • Brilliant! What a nice surprise to start the weekend, I'll be enjoying rummaging through the archive.

How do you find good music these days? I feel like it's become harder since music blogs started disappearing. Used to be you'd regularly stumble upon some real gems if you just spent enough time on hypem.

  • Ah great, hope you hear some things you like! It's been great leaving it play at random and then hearing certain songs just brings back memories for me... others I have no recollection of!

I know what you mean, although I see hypem is still going too! But doesn't feel the same as back then.

How do I find good music these days? It's not really changed that much over the years, I just have less time to spend listening sadly.
    - Search by new releases on sites like Juno, Clone, Decks etc that all have music that I'll typically like.
    - DJ Charts on the above sites and others can also be really good, I find DJ Charts preferable to recommendations/reviews on Music Websites because the curation can (not always) be better/more genuine.
    - That said, I will go through all usual Music Websites at the end of the year to take in the Best Of The Year lists. Because I haven't got the time anymore, it's useful to find the really good releases that I've missed out on.
    - Bandcamp, started using more in recent years by following artists and labels and getting notified of new releases. I haven't figured a way to find the best of Bandcamp though, because I'm sure there is so much good self-released music on there that I'm missing out on.
    - Private Music Trackers - They were huge years ago but I only use one these days and is a good place to keep on top of more obscure releases that I would have missed elsewhere.
    - YouTube can be really good as well, someone like https://www.youtube.com/ballacid for example has fantastic taste and shares great music.
    - Reddit, I don't really use social media but I do keep an eye on some subreddits now and again. https://www.reddit.com/r/TheOverload closest to my tastes I think but I've never really explored too much for music on Reddit, could be missing out.

That's about it, but would love to know what others do :)

  • I'm still mostly on hypem. But it's only worth visiting on weekends, when people actually use it. And the user base has been declining regardless, because someone has to blog about a release for it to appear on hypem and blogs have been disappearing for many years now.

I haven't figured out how to actively search Bandcamp for good music. It's mostly looking through other user's profiles that I discover stuff on there. And their own blog series Bandcamp Daily can have some good stuff, too.

Back in the day of one-click-hoster forums you had whole threads dedicated to subgenres of music where everyone who was interested could highlight notable releases. Those were a goldmine. I don't think we have an equivalent nowadays.

  • Yesss thanks for coming back. The songs you share always become instant favorites. Please don’t wait a full year before coming back again with more.

  • Wow thanks for the Post, I check the blog every month hoping to find a new post, your selection is TOP, you've shown me some really amazing gems through the years, I think I might have all of the tracks you've posted here. I took the time to go back on the catalogue and downloaded all of it a few years back.

Yes the internet has changed a lot over the years, Youtube has become my biggest source to find new tracks, recently found this guy who publishes mixes of a single artist showcasing their work for a given period of time, great selection (https://youtube.com/@thedaddyo44?si=fQNupNsIu7qN20MR).

  • Huzzah! There's also always Youtube via Discogs, which I find great for finding older gems while doing more systematic searches through label or artist back catalogs

  • Thank you KV. "Armchair spasm" likely refers to a muscle spasm or cramping in the muscles of the arms or shoulders, potentially while sitting in an armchair. I never meant it to be that 20 years ago. Love to all.
