Anthony Rother - Thermal Tune (buy)

Yet more stunning soundscapes from Anthony Rother, this time taken from his aptly titled 62 Minutes On Mars.

Cuticle - Towel (buy)

Not Not Fun's 100% Silk label certainly pushed all the right buttons this year with a string of highly impressive releases which really drew attention to an increasing indie diy/edm interaction.

Christopher Rau - Last Time Was So Good (buy)

Out on Hypercolour is this scruffy house jam by the ever impressive Christopher Rau. Top quality.

Synkro - Stop & Think (buy)

Synkro - Presence (buy)

I've been listening to a lot of Synkro's music just lately, here we have two pieces taken from releases on Millions Of Moments and Styrax, both labels which always warrant investigation.

Battant - Feverish (Ise8 Pre Demo) (buy)

Painstakingly beautiful music from Battant and Ivan Smagghe. A track that finishes his inspired 'A Few Things...' compilation.

Even Tuell - Mental Marathon (buy)

Fuzzy house rhythms from Even Tuell on the Hula Vortex EP.

dRUMMAN - Endless Galaxy (buy)

Out on Lux Rec at the beginning of the year was the crazy dRUMMAN EP which sees Jori Hulkkonen setting some serious vibes off. Massive, massive.

Recondite - Backbone (buy)

With just two releases to date and another one on the way shortly, the Plangent label has quietly put out some truly wonderful music this year. Backbone is taken from Plangent 002 but also features on Scuba's ever so good DJ Kicks.

MCMLXXXVII - Work (buy)

This is a brutal release by MCMLXXXVII, sampling Chicago tracks from 1987 and mixing them with some EQD.

Tomutonttu - Kuka On Mukana (buy)

Tomutonttu is the leader of Finnish experimental act Kemialliset Ystävät, here on his EP for Ducktails New Images label he puts across some intricate and downright catchy melodies whilst retaining a somewhat experimental feel. Talented guy.

Nocow - In A Way (buy)

Out on Ethereal Sounds, Nocow's 10" Fort EP is a delightful homage to some of the electronica I grew up with. Really nice vibes on this.

25 November 2011

The TransHumans - Interdependence (buy)

Solid electro tinged techno by The TransHumans, taken from the Renaissance 12" out a few months ago.

Altarboy - Crap (buy)

Released earlier on in the year Altarboy's Who Is Who was the first release by new label Wonder Wet Records. The track Crap reminds me a lot of the first release on Don't Be Afraid by Semtek. Keep an eye out for Wonder Wet's latest release too by We Reset, the track Melody sounds pretty nice indeed.

Rrose - Shadow Pocket (Variation One) (buy)

Rrose and Bob Ostertag's Motormouth Variations certainly proved a standout release on Sandwell District this year. Uncompromising and absolutely wonderful material.

Sivesgaard - Unorthodox (Ricardo Tobar Remix) (buy)

This is a top remix by the ever excellent Ricardo Tobar, here he does the business for Danish producer Sivesgaard and the Parquet label

Mario & Vidis - Illum (buy)

Mario Basanov and DJ Vidis team up again, this time for their new label Best Kept Secret, set up to showcase the finest music from the Lithuanian electronic scene. They have set the bar pretty high with the first release entitled Staar Wars. Four luscious pieces of interplanetary dance music. Very, very good.

Reeko - Angels And Demons (buy)

Just one of the incongruous techno jams off Reeko's super interesting Finding The New Matter LP out on his aptly named Mental Disorder label.

Ryo Murakami - Underworld (buy)

I briefly mentioned this Ryo Murakami EP earlier on in the year when talking about the Baud label. Revisiting the Underworld EP was the perfect decision in this murky onset of winter. Trawling through the past 12 months is something i've embarked with the aim of posting some bits i've enjoyed throughout the year....in January there was this masterpiece by Rolando, spine-chilling, spell-binding etc...

Rolando - Junie (buy)

For anyone who uses Tumblr, I have started up a new one called Exuperius to cater for any spontaneous postings.

Death On The Balcony - Them 3 Words (buy)

Death On The Balcony are a Leeds based DJ and production duo who recently featured this stunning track on the first of three compilations put out by Catz n Dogz Pets Recordings entitled Friends Will Carry You Home. Plenty more in store from the likes of Axel Boman, KiNK and Arto Mwambe.

Frieder Blume - We Play For Love (buy)

Taken from new label Crossfrontier Audio's sampler this is brilliant progressive track by German producer Frieder Blume. Infectious grooves with a very decent payoff.

Makson - Void (buy)

Ukranian producer Makson dishes out some heavily filtered melodic techno on his Void EP. There's something eternally inoffensive about this kind of sound.

Jackmate - Oval (buy)

Oval by Jackmate signals Phil E's annual return to pressing. Here we have a stuttering beat layered with acidy synths. So solid!

3 November 2011

Gui Boratto - Half Life (Patrick Chardronnet Mix) (buy)

Exactly the right approach taken on this remix by Patrick Chardronnet. Proof that minimal techno can still hit the spot.

Anaalivaihe - Nälkä 1 (buy)

Anaalivaihe is a Finnish experimental side-project of Imatran Voima's Perttu Hakkinen. The 7" release Kolme Tutkielmaa Nälästä may feel like 'world-music' in places, but it really is something more, the b-side especially gives off the vibe of a producer with his finger firmly on the pulse.

Ursula Bogner - Sonne = Blackbox (buy)

Lovingly compiled into an LP and released on Faitiche the homemade recordings of Ursula Bogner have been given their chance to shine 40 years after their creation. Sonne = Blackbox is an essential listen.

Datassette - Space Rubbish Theme (buy)

I remember hearing this wonderfully sleazy tune an age ago on Datassette's Soundcloud, eventually it has been released as a theme tune for the Super Space Rubbish video game. Genius.

Stunning deep house jam by Elbee Bad. Released on the ever reliable Yore Records.

Belgian house music at it's finest with this killer from Maxim Lany that featured on We Play House Red. Immense.

Things are heating up in anticipation of Kate Wax's Dust Collision album on Border Community. Label boss James Holden serves up a couple of dancefloor bound edits to whet the appetite.

This track by Area features on Mindshift's latest release. The track is something quite special, incredibly subtle in it's delivery it is a track I have been going back to for weeks now. The release also features some nice work by Hakim Murphy and Murdoc. One for the heads.

The Cartridge Family - First Refusal (buy)

Family Meeting One by The Cartridge Family was out in 1999. Chirpy house tracks that still sound fresh.

Taken from Junk Yard Connections first release. The Swedish label has just dropped it's second 12" courtesy of Hannes Netzell, it's a bit good.

Recloose - UHF (buy)

One of Recloose's own tracks which features on Hit It And Quit Revue. A compilation that showcases the sounds you're likely to hear on Recloose's and Frank Booker's radio show of the same name. Funk, Disco, House and more.

The Binary Collective - Sin Skin II (buy)

Great blurb to go with a great idea. The Binary Collective is a new project formed by the Autonomic family in order to make spontaneous music as a collective with multiple inputs from whoever happens to be in the studio at the time. It could be two people involved on production duties or it could be four or more such as on this first release. Made on a drunken afternoon crammed into Rosies Box (dbridges Studio), the collective put their talents together and the tracks formed themselves like Voltron, The Binary Collective was born

Container - Application (buy)

Editions Mego sub label Spectrum Spools has put out Container's self titled LP. Container makes jarring techno with a very DIY touch. Highly interesting.

John Heckle - Life On Titan (buy)

Taken from John Heckle's Life On Titan EP released on Mathematics. The talented Liverpudlian producer is making waves both with the Chicago based label to whom his analog house sounds fit right at home and also Tabernacle Records whose output has been oh so impressive since first forming a year ago. Mark du Mosch's Exegesis EP will be released on Tabernacle shortly.

2000 & One - Geometric Nature (buy)

Geometric Nature dates back to 1992 and the Never Ending Cycle 12" released on Eevo Lute Musique. Remastered and re-released digitally, the track is oozing modernity despite pushing 20 years old.

Going back to 2005 for this cracking b-side to Birdland's Slower EP. After a few years absence the Neurhythmics label that put this release out is back on the scene and offering some quality house music.

Jeferson Velasquez - Dedicated (buy)

Dedicated was the first release on Velasquez's Terpsichore label in early 2009. Coming in at nearly 15 minutes it smashes the boundaries of interpreting classic techno into it's own modern sound.

Philipp Quehenberger - Uffuff (buy)

Taken from Editions Mego's 12" of Philipp Quehenberger remixes.

Aquiescence - Nocturnal Wave (buy)

Not much known about the artist behind the name Aquiescence . One thing is for sure however, the track Nocturnal Wave is engaging dance music of the absolute highest order. Released on iSrecords.

Roll on Bestival.

Cubenx - Lovebirds (buy)

Following on from Rone's whimsically sublime So So So Ep, InFine chalks up another hit here with Cubenx' Wait & See EP. Deliciously deep tech house.

The Analog Roland Orchestra goes to town on this Orlando Voorn track. Puts you in a trance.

Unknown Artist - M.E.T. (buy)

Taken from the essential Les Edits Du Golem collection, an edit of SPK's Metal Dance (check out the young Jools Holland in the vid!)

Sven Kacirek - Paperflowers (Rework) (buy)

Pingipung has always put out some really interesting music, Sven Kacirek's Kenya Sessions is no different, a journey collecting sounds from Kenya patched together into something bordering tribal electronica. Then there were remixes, I was drawn to The Kenya Reworks release by the Lawrence edit but the pick of the bunch is this track.

Killer house track from Piticu, taken from a compilation by Moscow nightclub Arma17.

Following his superb effort with Oskar Offermann on an earlier Aim release, Moomin shows the way with some spacious house grooves. Marvin Dash then takes the track down a dark, dark path with a very atmospheric edit.

Yphsilon was the debut release by JR Seaton. There's really something special about this track. Upbuilding deep house.

31 July 2011

Marco Bernardi - Preacher Teacher (buy)

Some typically twisted electro courtesy of Marco Bernardi on this track on from a few years back. Super vocal sample used that really kicks off half way in.

Photonz - Our Fable (buy)

Taken from Photonz debut ep back in 2006 on Living Records, Our Fable gives out some sinister slo-mo vibes. Photonz more recently have been having great joy with some super remixes for Semtek and The Heels Of Love and of course running their own One Eyed Jacks label to release such killers as this.

Photonz - Aquarian Ball (buy)

A couple of Belgian tracks to finish today, taken from the Underground Belgian Wave Volume 1 compilation which puts together some stunning and obscure cold wave tracks originally released on cassette in the mid-80s.

Unit Moebius - Ecology (buy)

Taken from Clone Classic Cuts reissue of Unit Moebius tracks, The Golden Years is a collection of the legendary Dutch acts tracks from 1993 to 1997. So good.

Peter Horrevorts - Siren (buy)

Peter Horrevorts slows down the pace for this track taken from his new EP on Be Real entitled Birthschoolworkdeath. Quite possibly my favourite track of his to date, and that's saying something.

Grimm Limbo - Fortune Favors The Brave (buy)

Coco Bryce & Jon Lemmon - Furr (Remix) (buy)

Finishing off today's decidedly Dutch post are these two tracks taken from Shipwrec's compilation for Club Oddstream.

From one mix to another. I've been hammering Ata's mix for Live At Robert Johnson that was released a while back. An impeccably curated choice of new wave, post-punk and italo tracks, one of which is this early 80s hit by Grauzone.

Grauzone - Raum (Ata's Extended Mix) (buy)

Chris & Cosey three minute wonder.

Chris & Cosey - This Is Me

Unclassifiable music can be the most satisfying, Mordant Music's album from 2009 for example.

5 July 2011

Shakarchi & Stranéus - Iraq (buy)

Shakarchi & Stranéus - Liseberg (buy)

Shakarchi & Stranéus
are the Gothenburg duo who first caught my attention with their debut 12" on Geography last year, on this release they put some special touches to what at first sounded like a pretty straightforward deep techy house workout before their sense of atmosphere and pace grabs you and you soon realise they are anything but your run of the mill production duo. I think this fact has been reinforced by their appearance on one of the more exciting labels out there right now, Studio Barnhus. The label is run by Axel Boman, Petter and Kornel Kovacs, three guys whose impeccable and diverse taste has shone through in the first releases on Studio Barnhus. Originally vinyl only releases they are now slowly going digi.

R-A-G - Rage (Spaventi & Aroy Raw Mix) (buy)

This is a deliciously old school acid jam by Aroy Dee and Spaventi for R-A-G's Rage release on MOS.

An epic track that just oozes class. Taken from It's Gl'amour When You Have It - released on Musique Risquée earlier this year.

RVDS - Dreaming Pt. 1 (buy)

RVDS has had just the one release on Terpsiton with the rest being on the It's label based in Hamburg. His latest EP Under The Acid Moon follows on superbly from his LP earlier in the year and further shows his remarkable talent for making engaging and at times experimental deep house. Terpsiton meanwhile is a young label with a taste for underground house music and a smell for upcoming talent, this mix is from their newest signing Bufiman and is full on analog action.

Bufiman

Next up a bit of deep and cosmic house taken from Pyjamas Orion 6020 release on the Estrela label. Also features some great remixes by Analog Roland Orchestra and Mike Burns.

Awanto 3 and Tom Trago - Good Old Days (buy)

Here's a couple of gems off the Dutch label Studio Soulrock. Memory Foundation - Words (buy)

Dug this gem out from Memory Foundation's Reptiles In Exile release on Yore a couple years back. Euphoric chord driven deep house.

Mikkel Metal - Fubre (buy)

Echochord's Colour Series always makes for essential listening. The Pink vinyl split between Resoe and Mikkel Metal is deep Danish dub techno and house at it's most potent. Killer stuff.

Brooks Mosher - Mass Transit (buy)

Detroit's Brooks Mosher put out the fifth release on Steffi's Dolly label entitled Mass Transit. Contagious and at times frantic music that straddles the Detroit and Dutch connection perfectly.

Lapti - Sunpunch (buy)

Creeping into our consciousness since the turn of the year, Belgian label Vlek has been putting out small doses of mesmeric dance music through it's Amai 7" series. Coming up next on the label is the Dice Pool EP by Cupp Cave. Recommended if you like Lone or Jackson & His Computer Band.

Zacky Force Funk & Kutmah - Bombs (buy)

Borngraber & Struver - Dancing Queen (buy)

Chugging leftfield brilliance from Borngraber & Struber taken from their release entitled 'Urlaub' on M=Minimal. There's three really epic tracks on the release, including a 16 minute long prog-krautrock masterpiece. Superb.

Pic: Kari Altmann

Phidias - Cygnus Astratus (buy)

Out on Freund Der Familie is this amazing effort by new producer Phidias. A track 8 minutes long that rolls through each moment oozing darkness from it's restrained drum beats, simply stunning stuff. The b-side to Black Secret also features a track by Freund Der Familie reworked by Redshape.

7 Citizens - Watson's Party Seven (buy)

The Praterei label has been going about it quietly but effectively since debuting the killer Junojam a while back. This track by Austrian producer 7 Citizens is taken from the second release on the label, with a third 12" recently out too.

Zodiac Free Arts Club - Floating World (buy)

I cannot get enough of the Floating World album by Zodiac Free Arts Club. Released on Permanent Vacation it sees Argy pay homage to the krautrock/kosmiche movement led by Conrad Schnitzler et al. Also worth pointing out that Cytheria by June on Argy's These Days label is a magnificent synth-pop/electro album.

Kasper Bjorke - Symptoms (buy)

Kasper Bjorke is undoubtedly one of the most consistent producers around, always on the money with his songs, raising the bar when it comes to infectious disco tinged house. Symptoms EP has some new material by Bjorke along with remixes from Mano Le Tough and Truffle Shuffle. Very good stuff out now on Hfn Music.

DJ Phono - Knarhcslheuk Mi Ttinhcsfua Hcon Ebah Hci (buy)

New on Diynamic is DJ Phono's There's Confetti In My Shoe. Sublime house music really, enough said. I think the above track translates to having cold meat in the fridge.

Skinnerbox - Purgatory Five (buy)

Classic track this by Skinnerbox, out on BPitch Control as part of a release entitled Anapol. I can't shake noticing a similarity to Rippin Kittin for some reason... so as I say, classic sounding stuff.

Ghost is a stunning track by Re.You taken from his Our Thing EP with Rampa on Souvenir Music. The wistful vocals work in such a magical way.

Vril - V5 (buy)

Fantastic new release on Giegling comes courtesy of Vril, following up last years V1-V4 (covered previously here) with V5-V7. I can't stress how good these releases are. Giegling as a rule is always on point, and can highly recommend Matthias Reiling's (Session Victim) two LP's put out on the label.

15 April 2011

Felix Uran - Masprojekt_3 (buy)

Rasmus Folk - Pavel (buy)

Earnesto Rogers - Vespa (final)

The Endless House Foundation release on Dramatic Records has been my most listened to record for some time now. A conceptual compilation of tracks that came about from the idea of one man with an obsession for new technology and new sound. That man was Jiri Kantor, a millionaire who these days resides in the Adriatic city of Trieste. In the early 1970's however, he set up a foundation in his native Czechoslovakia for likeminded artists to come together as one and express themselves in the 'Endless House'. The compilation curates just a few of the tracks from the Endless House archives into a mindblowing taste of how things once were. You can hear more here.

Brain Machine - Alpha Beta Gamma (buy)

This is an amazing release on Titan's Halo Records from cosmic krautrock duo Brain Machine. Alpha Beta Gamma is a 17 minute journey to one side of the galaxy and back, gathering pace all the time before burn up on re-entry. Trimmed down remixes come from the ever impressive Johan Agebjorn and Von Spar, who themselves released a cracking track on Areal's IRR label last month.

Von Spar - Soarex (buy)

Kenton Slash Demon finish off their Schwarzchild Solution Trilogy in style with the magnificent Daemon, a track matched every step of the way by a stunning video by Dark Matters.

Magnets - Game Theory (buy)

Just released on Kill Em All is the fantastic debut EP by London based producer Magnets entitled Propeller Falls. Brimming with ideas and inspiration you can hear the analogue synths and drum machines working overtime to create some proper techno tracks with definite electro overtones. It's been a while coming, but this is a superb solo debut from the one time member of Simian. Excited to hear more!

Komarken Electronics - Spaciousness (The Exaltics Remix) (buy)

Swedish producer Komarken Electronics put out the Granular Material EP on The Exaltics Solar One Music label earlier in the year. It is some inspired electro.

Matthew Burton - Who Loves You (buy)

April Skies was the b-side to a 10" on Fine Art last April, superb hybrid techno from Herman aka Basic Soul Unit.

Herman - April Skies (buy)

Seuil is one of my favourite producers and selectors, so when he put out a release on one of my favourite labels - Circus Company - I was made up! The Nightwalker's Discovery doesn't disappoint.

Seuil - Heartbreaker (buy)

The Match by Spada from last year will totally get you with the massive slow down about 5 mins in. Euphoric Moroder inspired tech-house, but his newer track Soul Satisfaction oozes much more class. Both released on Koletzki and Meindl's Flash Recordings.

Spada - The Match (buy)

Spada - Soul Satisfaction (buy)

Dva Damas - Brand New Head (buy)

Don't think Dva Damas' release on Downwards can be described any better than this: In essence this record draws a line between the attitudes and aesthetic of leather-jacketed 50s rockers, late 70s New York punks and 90s techno industrialists to end up in 2010 where it's everything, all at once. Downwards also just released Tropic Of Cancer's Be Brave, video below.

On the iPod recently, lots of boring train journeys soundtracked to these tracks amongst others.

Stareaway - Unwise (buy)

This is absolutely one of the best tracks i've heard lately. We see Markus Guentner's pop-ambient aplomb coupled with the beautiful vocals of Heiko Badje to make up Stareaway, a new act for a new label - Couldn't Care More.

There's a little play button on the bottom left of the page which now loads up a playlist of all tracks posted up on here. Might come in handy for some of you.

Roman Lindau - Crasse (buy)

Roman Lindau's Contraste EP does just as the title suggests. On one hand you have Crasse the pulverizing dancefloor behemoth, then you have Lyrica a more involving and restrained production. Outstanding work from Lindau on both counts. Contraste is out on Mike Dehnert's Fachwerk label. Dehnert's latest album 'Framework' incidentally has just dropped on Delsin and is also well worth checking out.

Rivet - Inside Looking Out (buy)

Naked Index is a new label that has connections with Frozen Border and the debut release comes from an unknown quantity called Rivet. It's pretty killer!

Gemini - Let's Go (buy)

Robsoul has just put out a Tribute EP containing four of Gemini's 90's Chicago House hits handpicked by label boss Phil Weeks who describes the release as "a real gift for the new generation who don’t know this Chicago master. Gemini is a genius!”.

E.M.A.K. - Tanz In Den Himmel (buy)

This track missed the cut on last years A Synthetic History Of E.M.A.K. 1982-88 but Soul Jazz have righted this wrong with a new 12" of E.M.A.K material.

Kza - Goody Goody (buy)

This gem is taken from Kza's Let's Get Lost Vol.1 and is an edit of Vincent Montana Jr and Goody Goody's track It Looks Like Love released in 1978. Coming into 2011 and Let's Get Lost Vol.6 is just about to drop some further disco dynamite on us.

I'm very much enjoying Luv*Jam's 99 Minute Mix Tape just now. A spot on selection of dreamy deep disco and house cuts. Essential listening really, you can download it here. Also, following on from releases on We Play House and Phonica, Luv*Jam also recently debuted the brand new Crow Castle Cuts imprint, you can grab the 12" here.

Ron Deacon Feat. The Kat - Secret Garden (Refresh Mix) (buy)

Really dig the rolling bassline on this track.

Das Etwas - Escape From Scapegoat (buy)

Das Etwas - Chicago Halal (buy)

A classic from the Mule back catalogue. Das Etwas' Escape From Scapegoat goes into overdrive for some space-prog-disco wizardry. The 12" is now only £3.99 at Picadilly.

Ike - Ribbons (buy)

Ike follows up the mega brilliant Lost 4-Trax on Philpot with a new 12" entitled Supernatural. Once again it is a class above! Thump along to Ribbons.

Mr G - Raw Emotionz (buy)

More thumping house from Mr G taken from his Lifes Changing Face EP.

I'm all over
Cuticle's Merciful Swound record at the moment. Out on 100% Silk. Described as unstable zonked post-dancefloor amazingness and a crooked, dizzying and disorienting look at the last 25 years of House and Techno. Well worth a look.

Aqua Regia - NYC Smile On Me
